I’ve gotta say it: the wedding industry focuses way too much on the ladies. I totally get that some of us were planning our wedding back when the boys were crashing toy trucks into one another. But you know, we all grow up. Sure I’ve heard my fair share of “whatever she wants” coming from the groom. But I’ve also seen, more and more lately, the gentlemen being deeply involved in the wedding. Helping choose things, helping make things, just being an equal part of the whole thing.
And for these two, that was certainly the case. This wedding was equally what they both wanted. Both ideas were valued and respected. And isn’t that a beautiful way to start a marriage? Equal and mutually respected.
And this is the shot that sealed it for me: look at that happy face getting ready to put on his jacket. I freaking LOVE it! He was just as excited to put that jacket on as Katie was to put on her dress.
He chose pips from Star Trek to adorn his jacket, and to let everyone know he was captain for the day (his groomsmen were commanders).
Her niece adoringly watched her get ready (she’s had some practice at this flower girl thing before!),
And her sister sewed a fallen button back on without batting an eye (see the dress debacle from her wedding here!)
It feels like every time I got to share time with these two, something would happen that would make me want to scream, “YES! This is how relationships are supposed to be! This is how it’s done right!” Just in the way they speak with one another, in the way they touch one another, in the way they react to one another: it’s all done in respect and love.
They first met on the curling ice, so it only makes sense that their cake toppers would be curling stones (and if you’re wondering where one gets such an amazing creation, the answer is: a full day of Katie crafting).
Katie and Mike, goodness it was a joy to get to know you both and to be a part of your day. Really and truly, I feel honored to know you both. Thank you for your good example of love and respect that the rest of us can watch and learn from. You are a really lovely couple, and I know you will do good things together in this world!
