oh, the power of love…

The Anniversary Project – I didn’t have this blog last year, so I decided to do some one-year anniversary posts for all of last year’s amazing weddings:)

Love makes us do crazy and wonderful things.  It can make you quit your job, sell your home, and journey off to a new country that doesn’t speak your native language.  It changes you.  And never has there been a more clear and beautiful example of this than with Lisa and Rolando.

This was Lisa’s grandmother’s purse.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerThe next image gets me every time.  Lisa and her mom are pulling out the stitches of a bonnet that her Oma made for her when she was a baby.  And now, as a grown woman, it becomes her handkerchief on her wedding day.  Just beautiful.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerLisa’s a pretty incredible person, but she has never been one that I would call a chance-taker.  Her life has always been pretty well-thought-out, and I’ve seen her reason through a number of problems, always taking the path that makes the most sense.  When she met this boy and their love took hold, it started moving her to do things that seemed out of her comfort zone (you know, like, get engaged to a boy from GUATEMALA!).  columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerI think everyone around her knew it was love when we saw her willing to take these great chances.  And so she did just what love can make us do – she quit her job, sold her home, and journeyed to another country, where no one spoke her language.  And she is doing amazing things there.  Love made a beautiful change in her.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerJust before seeing each other for the first time that day.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographerThat first glance!columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerA girl from the corn fields of Ohio, and a boy from the coffee fields of Guatemala.  Love.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerSuch an emotional part of the day – the boys prayed over Rolando…columbus ohio travelling wedding photographer…and the girls prayed with Lisa.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerTheir ceremony was in the most beautiful ruins setting.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographerI would like to thank everyone in the next image for being so incredibly patient as we were shooting in a corner of the ruins in pitch black!  Things ran a little later than planned (ok, a lot later than planned), but everything turned out just right.columbus ohio travelling wedding photographerPretty cool tradition here – the bride and groom entered the reception to a shower of rose petals!columbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographercolumbus ohio travelling wedding photographer

Lisa and Rolando received our seasons of giving last winter, and they are doing great things with our meager donation.  Lisa is working hard to provide occupational therapy to children with great needs in the orphanages and families of Guatemala.  She is providing education to parents and orphanage workers – from how to work with kids on daily tasks to caring for wheelchairs.  Here is one of my favorite posts from her blog from earlier this year – please do read it – you will be a better person for it!  Rolando has started a mentoring program for young men who are of age to head out for life beyond the orphanage.  He has been working with them to build some amazing furniture out of wooden palates – teaching them skills they can use to make life better for them as they head out on their own.  They both have dreams of starting a big program or business that can help more kids who are aging out of the orphanages.  These kids leave without having hardly stepped outside of the orphanage walls, and with little to no skills on how to get along in daily life.  Lisa and Rolando have big plans to make beautiful changes happen in Guatemala.

Just like that beautiful change that happened in Lisa.  All it takes is a little love.

Love you both, Lisa and Rolando!  Happy, happy anniversary!  Thank you for all that you do for this world!
